Orthokeratology (Ortho-K): A Clear Alternative to Glasses and Surgery

At Rose Optometry in Berry, we’re pleased to offer Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) — a safe, effective, and non-surgical way to correct short-sightedness without glasses, daytime contact lenses, or laser surgery.

What is Ortho-K?

Orthokeratology, also known as Ortho-K, OK lenses, or corneal reshaping therapy, uses specially designed rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses worn overnight while you sleep.

As you rest, the lenses gently reshape the front surface of your eye (the cornea). In the morning, you simply remove the lenses and enjoy clear vision throughout the day — with no glasses or contact lenses required.

Unlike laser eye surgery, the effects of Ortho-K are completely reversible. If you stop wearing the lenses, your eyes will gradually return to their natural shape.

Who Can Benefit from Ortho-K?

Ortho-K is most commonly used to correct short-sightedness (myopia), with or without low levels of astigmatism. It can be an excellent option for:

  • Children with progressing myopia

  • Active adults involved in sport or outdoor activities

  • People who experience dryness or discomfort with soft contact lenses

  • Those seeking an alternative to laser eye surgery

Benefits of Orthokeratology

  • Helps slow myopia progression in children — research shows Ortho-K can significantly reduce the progression of short-sightedness.

  • Freedom during the day — no glasses or contact lenses needed for school, work, or sport.

  • Ideal for active lifestyles — especially helpful for swimming, team sports, and outdoor activities.

  • Comfortable for dry eye or allergy sufferers who may struggle with daytime contact lens wear.

  • A non-surgical, reversible alternative to laser vision correction.

  • Customisable over time as your vision or prescription changes.

Is Ortho-K Safe?

Like all contact lens wear, Ortho-K carries some risks, including infection if lenses are not cleaned and worn correctly. However, with proper hygiene, regular follow-up, and professional supervision, Orthokeratology is considered a safe and well-established treatment.

Some people may notice mild glare or halos during the initial adaptation period, particularly at night. These symptoms usually improve as your eyes adjust.

To keep your eyes healthy, it is important to:

  • Follow all cleaning and hygiene instructions carefully

  • Replace your lenses as recommended (typically every 12 to 18 months)

  • Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments

  • After the first night of wear

  • At one week

  • At one month

  • At three months

  • Every six months thereafter

Long-Term Care

  • Replace lenses approximately every 12 to 18 months, depending on their condition

  • Attend regular six-monthly reviews

  • If you stop wearing Ortho-K lenses, your eyes will gradually return to their natural shape

Why Consider Ortho-K for Children?

Myopia is becoming increasingly common in children. Higher levels of myopia are associated with an increased risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma, and myopic macular degeneration later in life.

Orthokeratology is one of the most effective evidence-based options available to help slow myopia progression during childhood.
